The Space Between Here and There

“What is it you like most about road trips?” he asked me, as we headed south carrying a RV full of friends.

For him, it was the music blasting, windows down, the open road and the feeling of freedom.

“It is the space between here and there, the space between leaving a destination and arriving at a new one that I love most,” I answered.

The journey.
The blank slate.
The space between destinations where you have left a part of yourself and you know not exactly where you are headed or who you will be in that moment upon arrival.

The sacred space where you just are…
with your thoughts,
with the landscape,
and with your traveling companions…steeped in presence and in the moment.

There is wisdom in this space.

Just a year before this particular conversation, I had taken a semester off of school to follow the calling of my soul and discover this sacred connection. Inspired by a broken heart and with blessings supporting me, this experience changed me on a fundamental level as I navigated the hills and valleys; not only of grief but of self-discovery.  I learned how to connect on a soul level to myself, to others and to the environment. I experienced the magic of waking up with no set agenda and being led to exactly where you need to be. My best friend and I camped in some of the most beautiful spots in the country and we explored the rivers, canyons and meadows of our big, beautiful country. I felt so in tune with myself and the Universe. We have many shared stories of magic, connection and soul support from this adventure.

This was but a chapter in my life; but one so profound that I return back to these lessons and insights again and again, even 18 years later.

I believe when you feel a calling within it is your soul trying to get your attention to realign your path with your purpose.

It is easy to veer off track on our soul’s journey. There are so many distractions pulling at us for our attention.

Love, career, children, wealth and adventure constantly advertised on billboards, social media and within our own heads are but a few. All of these can be fruitful and delightful destinations on our journey. But when we allow them to become the journey itself they begin to control our vehicles (our life) and we lose sight of who is in the driver’s seat.

When this happens, I search out the sacred space between destinations to release what is no longer serving me, find my connection and power, and allow myself to just be. For in finding space, I can listen to the truth that dwells within, I can relax into the arms of the present moment and I can give myself a break.

Whenever I find myself confused, unclear, overwhelmed or running on empty it is usually because I haven’t spent time in this sacred space and I must adjust my circumstances so I may retreat, replenish and renew.

The answers always lie there, in the space between here and there, in my rest stop, my retreat, my cave.

When you are tired, spinning, overwhelmed or depleted, go to the sacred temple of your soul and you will be led to the next step on your journey.

Sometimes this can be a matter of an afternoon walking in the park, exploring a museum, attending a women’s circle or time resting and journaling. Sometimes it may be a retreat to get out of the daily grind and listen on a deeper level. Sometimes it may be an extended time of sacred space where you work with a mentor or coach who can hold this space for you.

Whatever it may look like, it’s the space between here and there where you will find answers, clarity and inspiration.
